Diapers In December 2015

Most of us can agree that diapers are a necessary item for parents, yet, for many low-income families, having the ability to provide diapers for their baby is an ongoing challenge.

As we enter into this holiday season of family, reflection and giving thanks, please consider taking part in MOMS Orange County’s Diapers in December Drive.   We are committed to helping families have healthy babies and recognize that sometimes, it starts with something as simple as diapers.

MOMS is accepting diaper donations from December 1st to December 15th

For more information on how you can get involved with Diapers in December, contact Amanda by email at or by phone at (714) 352-3406.

Ron DiLuigi is Named President of MOMS Orange County’s Board of Directors

OriginalRonD5MOMS Orange County is proud to announce the appointment of Ron DiLuigi as the new Board of Directors president.

Ron is the former vice president and chief advocacy officer for St. Joseph Health, headquartered in Irvine. He retired in July 2015. In this capacity, he was the lead executive in St. Joseph Health’s fifteen-hospital system, in the areas of advocacy, public policy and government relations. Prior to this, Ron held executive positions during a 27-year career in government, most recently as director of the Orange County Health Care Agency. He is a MOMS Orange County founding board member and has served the organization for 14 years.

“Ron brings a diverse set of skills to the board, including a strong sense of history, a background in governance and advocacy, and an aptitude for navigating complex linkages between government and nonprofits,” says Pamela Pimentel, RN, CEO of MOMS Orange County.

In his new role as board president, Ron will use his extensive experience in leadership, planning and community relations to drive the MOMS Orange County mission to help mothers have healthy babies and families, and to ensure the long-term sustainability of MOMS Orange County. As a husband, a father of three, and grandfather of six, Ron understands the importance of this mission in the Orange County community.

While reflecting on the time before MOMS Orange County’s services were available to the community, Ron says, “The goal was to create an entity that could be a linkage in the community to help women access services.” He was instrumental in MOMS Orange County becoming the largest community-based provider of maternal-child health screenings and education services for low-income, underserved families in Orange County.

Ron received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from California State University, Fullerton, and is a graduate of the Management Executive Program at the University of California, Irvine.

MOMS Orange County Welcomes New Board President James Owens

Please join us in congratulating James Owens as the newly elected President of the MOMS Orange County Board of Directors.

James is an associate vice president and financial advisor at Morgan Stanley in Santa Ana, and has served on our Board for five years. He became interested in supporting us when he was introduced to our CEO, Pam Pimentel, at a Santa Ana Rotary Club meeting. James was attracted to our mission because it seemed very noble and pure at heart. “Who can say no to a mission like that?” he laughed.

As our board president, James brings numerous skills. Using his finance background, he has a keen eye for interpreting macro-level financial data, and using that data to help the board make informed decisions which will ensure the long-term sustainability of MOMS Orange County. James is also a careful listener, and is not afraid to ask difficult questions. He is adept at relaying our story to people outside of the non-profit and health industries, and continually seeks new ways to grow the impact of our organization. James muses, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if every community could have a MOMS Orange County?”

In his free time, James enjoys both listening to Jazz and playing Jazz on his saxophone, gardening, and spending time with his two children and wife. He reputedly emphasizes what a great honor it is to serve on the board of directors of such a committed organization. We are proud to call James our new board president, and look forward to growing MOMS Orange County under his leadership.

Veteran Board Members Return to MOMS Orange County

After a five-year hiatus, we are privileged and honored to welcome back Ron DiLuigi and Mark Marten to the MOMS Orange County Board of Directors. Their leadership and unique expertise in the healthcare industry is especially important now as we address the many challenges and opportunities brought about by the Affordable Care Act and rapidly changing healthcare environment.

Ron DiLuigi is the Vice President of Advocacy & Public Policy for St. Joseph Health in Irvine, and was a founding member of the MOMS Orange County Board of Directors in 1992. Before the creation of MOMS Orange County, Ron remembers how there was a veritable crisis in the county with a lack of OB services. “Back then, the goal was to create an entity that, even if it could not provide services itself, could at least be a linkage in the community to help women access those services” he says. Over the next 16 years, Ron was instrumental in helping MOMS Orange County become the largest community-based provider of maternal-child health coordination and education services for low-income, underserved families in Orange County.

Ron brings a diverse set of skills to the board, including a strong sense of history, a background in governance and advocacy, and an aptitude for navigating complex linkages between government and non-profits. In his spare time, Ron enjoys working out, reading, traveling (especially to Europe when he can get enough time off!), and spoiling his grandkids. Ron is most interested in helping MOMS Orange County work through the changing healthcare environment with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He also hopes to discuss and help disseminate best practices from MOMS Orange County to the wider community. He knows that his current term on the board will be an exciting one, and he is eager to tackle any challenges which arise in the future.

Mark Marten is the Chief Operating Officer for Prospect Medical in Santa Ana and first joined the board in 2001. His path to the board took a different route. He was originally a board member for the March of Dimes, and although he enjoyed his time there, he felt his talents would be better suited for an organization which had more of local focus to satisfy his passion for community health.

Mark served as board president from 2004 to 2007. Under his leadership, MOMS Orange County experienced tremendous growth in the number of families served and was able to build up the financial resources needed to purchase the organization’s first permanent location in Santa Ana.
Mark likes to say that he’s an “outside of the box” thinker. He believes that problem solvers should focus on “can” not “can’t” solutions, and tries to implement that belief in his leadership style. He knows that as an insider in the healthcare industry, his knowledge and contacts will be beneficial to the continued long-term success of MOMS Orange County.
Mark’s hobbies include spending time with his wife (a pediatric nurse), two daughters and son, watching and coaching all kinds of sports, and traveling. Moving forward, Mark would like to help focus the messaging of MOMS Orange County. He knows that the services provided are wonderful, and help create a sense of independence and empowerment for individuals who go through our programs.
Both Ron and Mark are, and will continue to be, valuable assets to MOMS Orange County, and we are tremendously excited to have their continued support as board members.

Workforce Campaigns Help Bring Awareness to MOMS Orange County

We are so honored to have been invited to two employee giving events in the past few weeks. The Southern California Gas Company invited us to their lunchtime charity fair on September 24th where employees participating in the Orange County Sempra Employees Giving Network could learn more about our organization.

We were also selected to be a part of a United Way giving event, held at Allergan Pharmaceuticals Headquarters in Irvine, last Friday. Over 500 employees participated, and were able to learn about the mission of MOMS Orange County. In addition, numerous employees helped assemble tie blankets (as seen in the photo) which we will distribute to families in need as cold winter months approach.
